Environmental education

Environmental Education Initiative

 About the project

International volunteers can contribute in many ways to this project, including helping with mending of fences, upkeep of facilities, painting and maintenance and helping to run environmental education camps for children and youth, as well as being an integral part in the outreach and awareness programmes for children from impoverished communities in  South Africa. These camps are aimed at making children more aware and responsible for their own local environments.

What can volunteers expect to do?

Volunteers are based at the environmental centre and will assist with running of the environmental education camps for children and youth, whichs could include outdoor hikes on the nature reserve, lectures and camping out with the children. The outreach activities would take the volunteers to impoverished schools to assist with the Eco-Schools programme. Maintenance and upkeep of the facilities, as well as painting and maintaining the educational resource centre could also form part of the volunteer tasks.

 Tasks and activities could include:

  • Assisting and running environmental education camps for children and youth
  • General upkeep of facilities
  • Obstacle course repairs and maintenance
  • Assisting with the Eco-Schools programme
  • Interacting with the children (games etc)
  • Improving and maintaining areas
  • Upgrading of resource centre
  • Painting of walls and murals
  • General Administration tasks

What characteristic traits are we looking for in a volunteer?

The project is looking for friendly, enthusiastic team players who would function well on their own as well as in a team. The project would be ideal for persons with good organizational skills and the ability to adapt to different situations to dive in and get involved with a busy operation. A love for the environment and with children would be an advantage, as well as an open mind and a lot of energy.

What can volunteers expect in terms of accommodation and food?

Ama Africa Experiences will take care of all accommodation and meals. There are varies options available and these include living with a local host family or staying in pre-arranged and inspected lodge accommodation. Depending on the accommodation types, meals are either prepared for the volunteers and served in communal dining areas, or volunteers prepare their own food during their stay.
